I have been a Research Fellow at the European University Institute of Florence, Italy (EUI) since September 2013. My work focuses on social and political change in Libya. I am also the Research Coordinator of the Middle East Directions Programme at the Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies.

I have been conducting regular fieldwork in Western Libya (Tripoli, Misrata, Bani Walid, Zuwara, Nafussa Mountains) and neighbouring countries since late 2012. My main research interests are in social transformations at the community and country levels and their articulation with the overall process of political change, with a particular focus in the communities defeated in 2011; processes of mediation and reconciliation ; security issues.

Prior to this, my main research focus has been on Egyptian politics and transformations within the regime before and after the 2011 revolution. I also have significant experience as an independent consultant and an analyst on North Africa and the Middle East with European governmental bodies and international organizations.
